Water Damage: Causes and Types

Causes of Water Damage

Water damage can occur due to various reasons. The most prevalent cause worldwide is heavy rainfall or flooding, which can overwhelm drainage systems and cause water to enter buildings. Other common causes include:
  • Plumbing leaks or burst pipes
  • Roof damage from wind, hail, or tree branches
  • Overflowing appliances, such as washing machines or dishwashers
  • Sump pump failure
  • Snowmelt or ice dams

Types of Water Damage

Water damage can be classified into three primary types based on the source and nature of the water:

Category 1: Clean Water Damage

Caused by clean sources such as broken pipes or leaking appliances. This water does not pose significant health risks and can be cleaned and dried relatively easily.

Category 2: Gray Water Damage

Originates from sources that contain contaminants, such as dishwashers or washing machines. It poses potential health concerns and requires professional cleaning and disinfection.

Category 3: Black Water Damage

The most severe type, caused by sewage backup, flooding, or other sources contaminated with bacteria and microorganisms. This water poses serious health hazards and requires extensive remediation measures.
